The benefits of being a volunteer are many. Your presence in the program enhances the quality of life in Sammamish. Here are some ways volunteering can enrich your life:

The City of Sammamish Volunteer Program is designed to bring volunteers and City Staff together, in a partnership, to assure the success of our programs and services. Volunteers provide valuable staff support and assistance to the public in a variety of programs and services throughout many City Departments.

Earth Day - April 24th 10-2 - Family Volunteer Event at Pine Lake Park
Celebrate Earth Day & Arbor Day by volunteering with your family at this event.  Please print and fill out a volunteer agreement if this is your first volunteer event with the city (age 14 and older).  Wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather and bring gloves.  All are welcome, including groups.  Hot dog barbeque will be served.  Non-Profits who are interested in having a booth at this event please contact Dawn for more details.  Dawn Sanders dsanders@ci.sammamish.wa.us; 425.295.0556.

Announcing - 4th Saturday- Sammamish Parks Volunteer events.
 
Beginning on Saturday February 27th the Parks Department will be holding volunteer events to help keep our parks invasive free. Each fourth Saturday, there will be a work party at one of our parks.  Volunteers 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult.  All volunteers must have a Volunteer Agreement on file with the city.  If you do not have a volunteer agreement on file, please download the document above and bring it with you to the volunteer event.  Locations will be announced on the City’s event calendar.  All work parties are from 9-1pm. 

Saturday March 27th 9-1 at Beaver Lake Park near the dog park. Park at the Baseball fields. We will be removing Scot's Bloom and repairing a fence.  Dress for the weather, bring gloves if possible, and wear strudy shoes.   

Saturday April 24th  10-2 Arbor Day/Earth Day at Pine Lake (see above)

Saturday May 22nd 9-1 Sammamish Landing Shoreline Clean Up.  Visit our newest park, which is not yet open to the public.  Help pick up the beach trash which washes up during the winter and remove invasive plants. 

The City of Sammamish and Washington Native Plant Society are recruiting community members to apply to participate in the free 10-week Native Plant Stewardship Training to be held in Bellevue beginning April 16, 2010. 

This extensive training meets Fridays beginning April 16, 2010.  Volunteer stewards can expect to learn native plant identification, Western Washington ecology, urban forestry, habitat restoration and wetland biology.   In exchange for the training, stewards will volunteer 100 hours in their community, specifically habitat restoration and native plant education.  Since 1996, 454 stewards have graduated from the Native Plant Stewardship Program and volunteered over 82,000 hours of service restoring degraded habitats and providing environmental education on native plants.

Sammamish Stewards will be able to work on a project at Illahee Trail.

Employee's from BECU help with Road Clean Up

Road Clean Up
This is your opportunity to work as a team and support the city's public works department.  You will be assigned an area within Sammamish, depending on the size of your group.  All supplies and pick up provided by the City of Sammamish.

City IT Department Inventory - help to catorgize and inventory all of the city's computer equipment.  Must be able to lift 20lbs and be able to pay close attention to serial numbers.

Storm Drain Decals Individuals and groups are needed to apply stencils to storm drains throughout the City with the message "Dump No Waste - Drains to Stream" to remind residents that all storm drains flow into streams and lakes, and in order to prevent the pollution of our natural resources, hazardous chemicals should not be poured into storm drains. The City will supply groups/individuals with all the needed equipment. Youth under the age of 18 will need to be supervised by an adult.

Event Host/Hostess
Would you like to get more involved in the Sammamish Arts Scene? The Sammamish Arts Commission will be holding several events at City Hall. They are looking for reception volunteers to ask as hosts for these events. Volunteers must be 21 or over. Dress for these events is business dress or semi formal (black or black and white preferred).

Nominate those volunteers, educators and community organizers who inspire you. Nominations are now open through December 10th. Please visit www.sammiawards.org for more information. The 2010 SAMMI Awards Ceremony with be held on Saturday March 13th at Mary Queen of Peace.

Sammamish Citizen Corps
The Sammamish Citizen Corps seeks community members to serve on its Council to help develop a readiness plan for crime prevention and disaster preparedness for the Sammamish area. Citizens Corps is a component of the USA Freedom Corps initiative to encourage individuals to volunteer to help their community prepare for and respond to emergencies and to participate in neighborhood crime prevention programs. Community members from the business, faith, and community service sectors are encouraged to become involved in this endeavor. The Sammamish CERT program offers local classes for CERT Certification. Upcoming Summer Events - Volunteers Needed

Farmers Market -
Market begins May 19th and runs through the end of December. Help is needed with set up and take down and special events. Contact sfm_v@hotmail.com.

Concerts in the Park -
Help Sammamish Parks & Rec at the summer concerts. Thursdays July 8 thru August 26.

Fourth on the Plateau - 20,000 attend this event. Volunteers are needed in many areas including zone managers (security, lost children, clean up); volunteer coordinators (upper & lower commons) zone directors, children's area and vendor support.

2010 Fourth on the Plateau Volunteer Orientation is Monday, June 28th at City Hall.

Sammamish Days - August 21st. Celebration of the rich culture of Sammamish residents. Recruiting now for community volunteers with ties to diversity; especially entertainment, food vendors and craft vendors.
